I feel that the winter solstice marks the beginning of a new year. It feels logical with the days beginning to lengthen again. In the same vane, I feel that a new day begins at dawn, not midnight.
A day beginning at dawn - or even at dusk, as it does in traditional lunar calendars - makes much more sense to me than midnight. Just as having the year start at a natural marker like a solstice feels less contrived than a human-invented date like January 1.
