Last week, we had a pair of Labrys (Air suit) cards for the weekly draw. That pointed us toward clear thought and rational analysis.
This week, the Water suit directs us toward our emotions. That’s not as much of an about-face as it appears, really, since the way we think and the way we feel are inextricably intertwined.
But having our attention directed more toward one or the other — reason or emotion — can help us sort out whatever the world throws at us at any given time.
Today’s pair of cards suggests that immersing ourselves in positive, satisfying emotions, wherever and whenever they occur, might be helpful, even healing. But the message also includes the caveat that we not get stuck in nostalgia about a golden past.
Sure, life these days is pretty chaotic and challenging. It’s tempting to lean into good memories as a distraction from the gritty now. But it’s all part of the natural cycle. Our ancestors saw both good times and bad, fun times and difficulties. There was no perfect, beautiful golden age — except maybe the time when we were children and didn’t understand the complexities of the Big World.
Our busy-busy capitalist world often denigrates emotion as some sort of lesser way of experiencing life. I disagree with that. We are emotional creatures at heart (ha!), no matter how hard we try to reason our way through life using nothing but spreadsheets and data sets.
We connect with each other at the heart level. We use our intuition to guide our decisions. Yes, data is important. I’m not telling you to ignore necessary information. But combining it with a heart-led connection with the situation you need to make a decision about adds in some vital components that hard data lacks: compassion, courage, generosity.
The things that make us human.
Maybe that’s what this week’s cards are really suggesting, that we be our fully human selves as we navigate whatever life throws at us.
This week’s cards:
Nine of Rhytons: Time for some emotional and maybe sensual satisfaction, always a pleasing experience. It won't last forever - what does? So enjoy the good times while they last, don't take them for granted, and do your best to accept that everything changes with time.
Six of Rhytons: The past is very present right now. Whether it's memories of good times or comparing current difficulties with past ones, you're looking more backward than forward. Just remember that you're no longer the same person you were back then, and keep that nostalgia in perspective.
