This week's Minoan Tarot cards:
The Lovers: Every choice you make has a consequence. Make your choices with care and do what you know is right, even if it's hard to do. Don't put it off just because it makes you uncomfortable; that will result in a much worse outcome.
Two of Horns: The world moves and changes around us. This card is a reminder that those changes are a normal part of existence, and everything evens out in the long term, gains offsetting losses. Be flexible and do your best to go with the flow.
I’ve been drawing two cards every Monday for quite a while now, always with the same pattern: I draw the first card from the top of the deck, for the obvious, above-board aspects of the week to come. Then I draw a second card from the bottom of the deck to clue us in to the subtle, hidden aspects of the week, the less obvious bits that might help us deal with whatever the world throws at us.
Lately, when I draw a card or two for myself, I’ve often found myself phrasing the request with words like “how to handle the chaos” or “how to hang in there despite it all.” So many of us are just barely hanging in there right now.
Then this morning I realized I need more than just “how to hang on by the skin of my teeth.” I need beauty. I need space. I need a deep breath that flows through the whole universe.
So I’ve decided to change up the focus for each of the Monday cards.
I’ll still be drawing two cards, one from the top of the deck and one from the bottom. But the top one will now be “how best to hang in there despite everything.” And the bottom one will focus on how to find the good things that will help us get through it all: the beauty and the space that we need to bolster us so we can manage the chaos.
This week’s first cards is The Lovers, which speaks (among other things) to making choices — most especially, to doing what we know is right, even if it’s the messier or more difficult choice. I find it helpful to remind myself of my values and focus on them when making decisions. John Beckett discusses this topic in depth in his recent post: Remember Who You Are. Don’t lose yourself in the chaos. You know who you are and what you stand for. Make sure your actions are in alignment with your being, and you won’t lose your path.
This week’s second card, the one from the bottom of the deck, is the Two of Horns. This card has been stalking me for a while now, and I’m not surprised, given the energy and motion of the Big World these days.
But this time, it’s giving us a clue as to how to find the breathing space we need to keep ourselves sane, to continue to find the beauty in the world (more on finding that space and beauty in Irisanya Moon’s recent post here).
The Two of Horns reminds us that small-scale change happens in our lives all the time, not just during Interesting Times. It’s the normal motion of life, though it can become more pronounced in eras like the one we’re living in now.
When I drew the Two of Horns this morning, the image that came to me was of an old-fashioned sailing ship rocking on the waves of the deep sea, its wooden planks and rigging creaking as the ship rolled from side to side and tipped up and down.
If you’re in a boat that’s small enough for you to feel the water’s movement clearly, you eventually start unconsciously shifting your weight to match the deck’s motion. It’s a kind of dance between you, the boat, and the water.
I think that’s what this card is suggesting as a way to find some of the goodness we need right now: We must learn to metaphorically shift with the rolling motion of the times. And that’s much easier to do if you can feel the center of your balance (remember who you are - The Lovers card).
So it’s time to dance, my lovelies. Time to find our rhythm and our pace so we can ride out the rough seas. Time to be our authentic selves as we breathe and focus. Because every time one of us manages to do that, we give hope to others that they can do the same, too.
I wish you a week in which you find the beauty and the space you need.
