Today’s cards are an interesting combo that got me thinking about the whole “your inner child” thing.
The Fool shows up pretty rarely when I’m flipping cards over, so when it does appear, I take notice. Especially if it’s combined with a “grown-up” card like the Lady of Labryses.
I remember as a kid, being desperate to be a grownup. And of course, once I grew up and realized that actual adulthood didn’t match the fantasy version that child-me had envisioned, I wished I was a kid again.
Maybe there’s a healthy, satisfying middle ground.
The Lady of Labryses is very much a grown-up. But she allows her mind to expand and roam in ways that are more typical of children. Sometimes that’s the only way to solve otherwise intractable problems. The difference is, unlike a child, the Lady of Labryses knows that the final step in the process is to sort through all the brainstormed ideas and discard the ones that are impractical or dangerous. What’s left, then, is a collection of unexpected but useful possibilities that common-sense thinking would never have come up with.
Then there’s the Fool. I’ve heard this card described by many people as the Inner Child, the one who is free to be their true selves and simply enjoy life without any hindrances or worries. Honestly, though, I’m not sure actual childhood is that 100% rosy. I think this may be a grass-is-greener kind of issue. When we’re kids, adulthood looks fabulous and enticing. When we’re adults, childhood develops a nostalgic golden glow.
What if we took the helpful aspects of childhood (The Fool) — the trust in the universe, the ability to be in the moment, the vivid imagination — and supported that with the life experience we have as adults that helps us judge whether those wild ideas might actually work (the Lady of Labryses). And then we use that combination, not to limit ourselves, but to provide substance for realizing those flights of fancy that might not be so fanciful after all?
I think that might be a happy balance.
Today’s cards:
Lady of Labryses: Time to brainstorm! The issues you're facing aren't solvable with conventional thinking. So it's time to leap out of the box! Ignore "common sense" and "common knowledge" and let your imagination go wild. But remember to follow up with the all-important second step: sifting out the solutions that truly aren't feasible so you can find the one unexpected answer that does the trick.
The Fool: Close your eyes and take the step, trusting that the path will be there. It can be really hard, as an adult, to simply trust the universe. But you're intimately entangled in this sacred consciousness that surrounds and penetrates us; it's what we're made of. So listen to the music of the spheres, the hum of your own cells, the song of the quantum foam... and let it lead you where you need to go, even if you don't know just yet where that is.
I wish you a beautiful week!
