It’s rare for me to draw the same card two Mondays in a row. When it happens, I pay attention.
And it just happened.
I drew the Ace of Horns last week, and here it is again, along with the Two of Horns to reinforce the Earth Suit focus of today’s reading.
It’s not surprising to see this kind of reading during the holiday season, of course. This is a time when many people become frazzled, worn out, ungrounded, exhausted. And what with everything that’s going on in the Big World right now, on top of The Holidaze and the “new normal” collection of germs swimming around us, this is good advice.
But I feel like there’s more to it than just “stay grounded and be practical.” Some days lately, I’ve felt like I’m almost being pulled loose from the Earth, about to fly off into space from all the wild energy that’s spazzing around. So maybe it’s even more important than usual this year to stay in our bodies, stay centered, and focus on what the marketers like to call the simple things in life.
What can you do to “be here now”? If your body allows, paying attention to ordinary, neutral physical sensations can help: the pressure of the chair against your legs, the feeling of your shirt on your arms and shoulders, the scent of the tea you just brewed. Going outside to breathe in the air and feel its chill on your skin (or its heat, if you’re in the southern hemisphere). Doing things with your hands: writing, drawing, knitting, scrubbing a sink, kneading bread dough, holding a book and turning its pages. Focusing on the ordinary and allowing it to become just a little magical: cooking a meal, folding the laundry, hugging someone who’s dear to you.
There’s no need to go out of your way for any of this. Everyday life provides plenty of opportunities to sink into the being-ness of the physical and allow it to tether us to the material world, keeping us steady.
However you choose to stay here and now, I hope you have an enjoyable week full of gentle magic and quiet joy.
Ace of Horns: Stay grounded and attend to the material practicalities of life. This includes your health and well-being. Slow down, be patient, and make sure you're doing what needs to be done, whether that's paying bills, finishing projects, or taking a nap.
Two of Horns: The world is in flux, both the Big World and our own private lives. It will all even out in the end, but for now, stay focused on whatever needs to be done each day. Focus on the practicalities, and the new pattern will sort itself out soon enough.
And yes, that’s a crease across the middle of the Two of Horns. My deck has seen a LOT of use! Does your favorite Tarot deck show signs of loving wear?
