One of the more challenging aspects of being a writer is having to be a part-time marketer as well. It would be nice if I could just hole up in a cottage somewhere and write full-time, never having to worry about how Amazon categorizes my books or whether anyone buys them. Unfortunately, since the days of wealthy patrons supporting writers and artists are long gone, we creative types have to either do our own marketing or pay through the nose to have other people do it for us.
Fortunately, there are some fun activities involved in marketing. For me, one of the enjoyable bits is doing interviews. I get to meet all kinds of lovely people and chat with them about lots of different subjects (though the Minoans do tend to come up more often than not). Over the years, I’ve done everything from written interviews via email, to live radio (remember radio?), to podcasts, to live social media videos. I love how there are so many different ways to share with each other.
Over the past half-year or so, I’ve done a number of interviews. Most of them were pre-recorded podcasts, so at the time I didn’t know exactly when they were going to be available.
It turns out, a bunch of them have managed to cluster together this autumn. I didn’t plan it this way, I swear! I’ve shared links to some of them piecemeal over the past few Substack posts. But it occurred to me that it would be good to have them all in one place. So here you go, with the most recent one first.
✨ Gwilda Wiyaka of Mission Evolution interviewed me yesterday, and the show is up already. Gwilda asked me a lot of questions about how the Minoans lived and worshiped and how they viewed the world, then we discussed how that worldview can inform our thoughts and actions today to make the world a better place. With this one, you can view the video on Rumble, or listen to the audio version on Spreaker.
✨ I also chatted with Aerik Arkadian of Music, Myth & Magick. We talked about music in Minoan context, which was a lot of fun. He was also interested in the deities and iconography of Minoan religion as well as the Minoan Mysteries (the probable precursor to the Eleusinian Mysteries). You can watch that one on YouTube:
or listen to it on Apple Podcasts:
or iHeart.
✨ I had an audio podcast interview with Raegan Shanti of WitchingAround. We chatted about revivalist paganism and how that connects the ancient and modern worlds. You can find our conversation on Spotify:
✨ I participated in a panel discussion about working with the spirits of the dead, along with three other awesome authors: Lisa McSherry, Diana Rajchel, and Ben Stimpson. The discussion was moderated by Catherine Le Fay of The Witty Witch. For such a colorful culture, the Minoans were a surprisingly death-oriented people! I really enjoyed getting to hear the different points of view, since all four of us have substantially different spiritual practices and ways of connecting with the spirits of the dead. You can find that one on Spotify, too:
✨ And finally, another one with a death-and-dying theme. I chatted with Lugal about the aspects of Minoan culture and religion having to do with death, dying, ancestors and the spirits of the dead. We talked especially about how the Minoans’ attitude toward death and the dead is very different from those of later cultures. You can hear all about it on YouTube:
That should be enough to keep everyone busy for a while! It feels a little overwhelming, having them all be released over just a couple of weeks. It didn’t feel at all overwhelming when I did them, because they were spaced so far apart on my calendar. I hope you find them enjoyable and informative. And if there’s a podcast you think I should be on, please let me know. I’m always happy to do more.
My Substack is free, but if you’d like to support my work, you can find my books here and my art here and here.
