We’ve got a stalker card again, and it’s a great one! I don’t think I’ve ever had The Sun as a stalker card before - this is a first for me. And I can’t say I mind.
This is the third time in four weeks that the Sun has turned up in my Monday cards-for-the-week draw. I realize this doesn’t mean the whole world is magically sunny and beautiful all of a sudden. But it does suggest there are good things within the chaos, and those good things are within our grasp.
That’s heartening.
I’ve explained before how I designed the Sun card, but I don’t think I’ve shared my process for the Three of Daggers, so I thought I’d reveal a little about that today.
As you can probably tell by now, none of the Minors in this decks are pips; all the images, even the simple ones, illustrate the meanings of the cards.
In the case of the Three of Daggers, I wanted a welcoming image that conveys the idea of “first fruits,” whether that’s new adventures or early payoffs. So I painted a small Mediterranean harvest spread out on a table: a footed bowl overflowing with grapes, a handful of grain stalks (the Minoans grew wheat, barley, and rye) and a platter of olives. These are interspersed with three daggers or knives, which may have been used to cut the fruits and grain during the harvest or which might be used to further prepare them to eat.
I like thinking of each card’s image as a gateway or doorway into the card’s meaning. We can imagine ourselves stepping through the “doorframe” created by the border and into the scene, allowing ourselves to be immersed in it in order to absorb the intricacies of its meaning.
I hope this week holds many wonderful harvests and sunny days for you!
This week’s cards:
Three of Daggers: How appropriate for Lammas-time (at least in the northern hemisphere). First fruits of the harvest: good stuff is starting to come in, figuratively or literally - or both. Whatever you've been working on, especially if it's something new, it's beginning to pay off (finally) and you're seeing real results.
The Sun: It's time to believe in yourself. You can see the pattern emerging from the chaos, and it offers good things to you. Allow yourself to shine in this moment. Take the time to appreciate and enjoy the good things that are happening within and around you.
My Substack is free, but if you’d like to support my work, you can find the Minoan Tarot here, my books here and my art here and here. Restack and share if you feel so inclined - I appreciate it!
