I love to cook, both from cookbooks and from my own imagination. Food is such a fundamental aspect of life, such a great way to connect with people - via cooking and eating.
It’s also a great way to connect with other cultures, both ancient and modern. I’ve “travelled around the world” via cookbooks, and travelled back in time as well.
As you might guess, Minoan Crete is one of my favorite “food destinations.”
We don’t have any ancient Minoan cookbooks to help us out. But we do have archaeological evidence about the food the Minoans ate and the way they cooked it.
So when I wrote my most recent novel, I included a lot of food descriptions. To me, that helps make the ancient world feel so much more real.
Then I was inspired to work out a recipe for one of the food items that shows up early in the story, some date-based sweetmeats that the main character buys in the marketplace in Phaistos.
I’ve written up the recipe in today’s Minoan Path Blog post; that’s a photo of the first batch up top. I was lucky to get a picture with that many still on the plate - my family were eating them almost as fast as I could make them!
So here’s the post with the recipe. I hope you enjoy some yourself!
